It's better than just having a ceremony, and once it's done- all the guests (many may have traveled a long way to attend) and the bride and groom - just split.
There would be no chance to socialize and celebrate the occasion.

I guess you mean wedding receptions? They are basically held as part of a getting acquainted thing. It's the bride and grooms first day/night out as husband and wife.

to celebrate and party after being married... You eat and cut the cake and you have fun and you even dance! It is a time to celebrate and that is when the couple opens gifts before leaving on their honeymoon... I love it!
