You must get your Basic certification which will take a semester anyway, (plus three months to get registered and tested with NREMT and State) so just get started there now.

Most of the good Paramedic level schools require that you have worked 1 year as a Basic to enter. There are some private schools that will take anyone but they cost a lot of dough. Mount SAC and UCLA are the top Paramedic schools near LA, but you can look into that later... you've got time. (If you work at a hospital or volunteer firefighter, you can get some great recommendations to get you into the school you want that way too.)

There is EMT Basic class starting in Santa Monica in February. Check out the community colleges near you too.

Paramedic Salary Los Angeles

Hi! I'm currently an EMT-Paramedic, but first I was a certified medical assistant, too. Just wanted to give you the heads up; Paramedic school is tons harder than medical assistant school. I was top of my class at the medical assisting course, but had to really study to keep good grades in paramedic school. Even the anatomy and physiology is at a completely different level; you will have to learn parts of the body that you didn't even know existed!

There are several levels of EMT's, and they can vary a little from state to state, so I'll just give you the National Registry standards.

The first level is EMT-Basic. This is a semester long course, and is considered the entry level certification. Honestly, you do more invasive procedures as a medical assistant than you ever will as an EMT-Basic. It's mainly a little A&P, overview of diseases and conditions, some basic terminology, and basic trauma and medical interventions. The average pay for an EMT-Basic is $8 an hour (I'm sure you make more in California, since the cost of living there is incredible).

The second step is EMT-Intermediate. The majority of people just bypass this and go straight to paramedic school. You just have to be an EMT-Basic to qualify for paramedic school, anyways. The EMT-Intermediate course requires about six months of field experience, and it is about a month or so long. You will learn how to start IV's (actually quite different from drawing blood) and give a few different medications.

The final step is EMT-Paramedic. This couse is about a year to two years long, depending on whether it ends in a certificate or an associate's degree (go for the associate's if you don't already have one). Some states require an associate's as the minimum level for licensure in that state. In addition to full time coursework, you will also be required to complete several hundred hours of clinical rotations and an internship with a local ambulance company. The average pay for a paramedic is $30,000-$45,000 a year, depending on which type of service you work for and in what state. Fire based services pay more, while private services (AMR, Life Care, Rural Metro) pay less. Municipal and hospital based services fall somewhere in between.
