let x = number of sheets bought ($6)
let x+3 = number of blankets bought ($12)

6(x)+12(x+3) = 108
6x+12x+36 = 108
18x = 72
x = 4
x+3 = 7

The Coopers bought 4 sheets and 7 blankets.

Check : 6(4)+12(7) = 24 + 84 = 108 QED

Don't panic when having to think about x's. Usually you're trying to set up some kind of ratio or relationship. Start by breaking the problem down into smaller pieces. In this case it all starts with the sheets. He buys a unknown # of sheets for $6, thats 6x.
next he buys blankets, where he buys 3 more blakets than sheets, so thats x+3 but they cost $12 so its 12(x+3). We also know when everything is added up it costs $108 so,
$6x + $12(x+3) = $108

Let x = the number of sheets. That means the number of blankets would be (x + 3).

Now then the number of sheets*the price of the sheets plus the number of blanket*the price of the blankets is your total bill.

6x + 12(x + 3) = 108
6x + 12x +36 = 108
18x + 36 - 36 = 108 - 36
18x = 72
18x/18 = 72/18
x = 4

So they bought 4 sheet and 7 blankets

Hope this helped.

You need to use a second variable, say y, that you relate to x.

If x is the # of sheets, let y be the # of blankets. They bought 3 more blankets than sheets, so y=x+3.

To find the value of x, you need to set up the equation for their total bill:

$6x + $12y = $108

Since y=x+3...

6x + 12(x+3) = 108

Get it?

6x+12(x+3)=108

x is the number of sheets
x+3 is the number of blankets

let me guess, linear systems like the same thing i am doing. isnt it this:

x+y=108
6x-12y=108

(12)x+y=108
12x+12y=1296

subtract x and y
18x=1296
x=78
