Tampons are bad even when you are menstruating as they are unhygienic and unsafe; the risks are increased when you are not menstruating.

Tampons are harmful to vaginal health because they prevent normal self-cleaning functions of the vagina by plugging the vagina as well as absorbing vaginal fluids preventing it from flushing out harmful or excess bacteria.

The tampon absorption can also dry out mucosa resulting in vaginal splitting giving bacteria another place to multiply and giving toxins produced by bacteria with TSS a more direct route into the body, the mucosa can also become irritated.

Tampons give bacteria and yeast the perfect place to multiply upon where it is warm, moist and filled with nutritious menstrual blood, think about if a doctor was to leave a cotton ball in an open wound how the bacteria would multiply, it is similar with tampons and because tampons leave fibres in your vagina the bacteria continue to multiply even for a little while after a tampon is removed.

Commercial tampons such as Tampax increase the risk further not just because the materials they are made from super-absorbent materials, but also because they contain chemicals from bleaching during manufacturing that affect normal vaginal pH that in turn affects the normal vaginal flora.

If a person was to use a tampon when not menstruating it would be a matter of unnecessarily exposing themselves to the risks of tampons, thus increasing risks of vaginal infections such as bacterial vaginosis, Toxic Shock Syndrome, cervical damage, vaginal splitting, chemical absorption.

Risks from tampons are worse if a person uses tampons when not menstruating, this is because without menstrual blood to absorb the tampons will just absorb menstrual fluids so preventing vaginal self-cleaning and splitting the walls of the vagina even more than they would when used during menstruation.

I would have to say yes. Toxic shock syndrome is likely to occur anytime you wear a tampon. Why increase the risk?
Plus, wouldn't it be really uncomfortable?! It's all dry down there.
