here is the deffinition i found on encarta, but it does not give me enough information to be able to use it in a sentence that shows that I understand what it is.

so can anyone explain to me what the purpose of a Sheik is/ what do they do in their comunity. what is their role?

One of the things sheikhs do is give speaches on Fridays at the mosques, right before the Friday prayer.
They are basically people who have studied Islam and its scriptures.

It kind of like sermons at the Christian Sunday Sabbath and the Jewish Saturday Sabbath.
