The whole world of the story is called "Arda"
Middle Earth is the continent where characters do their battle against Sauron. There is also a place called Valinor, where the Elves go in the end. Also, Gods of the Arda are living in Valinor. Sauron, Saruman and Gandalf have all been in Valinor and then come to Middle Earth.

Basics have a very ancient concept. Here it is. Iresland
was sent to heaven. Ireland today is north of the atlantis
legends where the actual filming, and characters today reside.
No matter what people argue, how does one know where one
lives? The photograph of your existence is available to the
brilliance of the angels was a legend to cap off all legends and
to make a rule of orders to this mystery. One must survive on
that planet that God designed. This is easier then those that
are wild. Lord of the Rings was a royal chamber of stars that
leave us thinking perhaps they were Gods, or deities, or stars
maybe angels of an ancient place. Yet the point is those places were and are the successful lands even today. The rich
histories of all humankinds learnings made a point that even
little Ireland eventually was through the choice of blessed
peoples of the highest good and prayerful life. Here is a good
site with European histories. http://www.middlearth.com

It's called middle earth. Tolkien (who wrote the books) was an Englishman who was a professor of languages. He actually based the Hobbit "shire" on Warwickshire in England. The language he uses for the Elves is a cross between Finnish and Welsh Gaelic. Hope you enjoy the books - they're fabulous!
