Is it because of the thermohaline currents? the salinity?

It's warmest on the Eastern side of Continents. This is due to the circulation of the Sub Tropical High Pressure Systems. This circulation causes up-welling on the Western side of Continents. It makes no difference which hemisphere your in.

The warmest sea surface temperatures in the world are on the eastern side of the Pacific Ocean north of Papua New Guinea. This very warm water helps to generate the typhoons of the South China Sea.
