You can be great at something when compared to the general population, however that doesn't mean you're THE best at it. (That's all American Idol is saying BTW) Consider the source too. You have to look at the person telling you "You suck", do they have any other reason to say this? Anyone can say something nasty but they might be having a bad day or they might just be a nasty person. However if they are truly an authority on your "talent" you have to listen and try to see it without emotion and examine why they would think that. It may be there are things you can improve on or it may be you need to look at your choice in different way. Someone who is great at drawing may never be a renowned artist BUT they can make a very successful career in art nonetheless like in advertising.

Well, I've been told many times that I'm smart. I am not saying that to sound conceited, it's just what I've been told. I don't think so. I'm a high school drop out with a GED.
I'm attending college right now and I feel so much pressure. I feel like everyone expects for me to do well and I have to admit, I do struggle, a lot. I hate being under pressure. I feel like if I don't get straight A's, I'm letting people down and mostly letting myself down.

It's not enough for others to say you are great at something. You need to have a passion for whatever it is you do. When I was a kid, people would say to my parents that I was a great pianist. That was not enough for me. I was never concerned about being great. I had one simple goal: to learn Richard Clayderman ballads. I have practiced and practiced and practiced for years and I have no fear of playing in public for 2 reasons mainly. First I have practiced plenty and second I have a passion for the piano.
You wont be great at something when you "try it out." Don't just try it out. You need to choose role models who have accomplished something similar to what you want to accomplish and learn from them. Read books about it and practice, practice, practice.

Well to be honest with you I don't know how some of those people have been told how great they could sing. I understand why some people hate Simon Cowell but unfortunately he is just being BRUTALLY honest.

all people hear criticism and some of us get stronger and some break apart. it's about choice

I don't think that the point is to hurt people. I think that is just the reaction. The main point is to weed out those that just aren't good enough.

Just curious? How mant times have you watched that "unique" scene from The Silence of the Lambs? Or is it constantly on pause all the time on your tv?
