I am trying to prepare a tax return and need to find the federal id number for one of my previous employers.

If you received a W-2 or 1099, it's right on the form. For a W-2, look in Box b, which is usually directly above the employer's name. On a 1099, it's the payer's federal id number, usually just below their name and next to your social security number.

Look on your W-2. It should have a box that says something like Payer's Federal Identification Number.

If you received a Form W-2 from the employer, it should be indicated. Usually, somewhere near the address.

Look on a tax form they gave you. You can also call them to get the number. If there is a reason for you to have it, they should give it to you.
