Because the term "socialist" has been incorrectly equated with "communist" and wouldn't play well in American politics.

The better question is why do Republicans think that the Constitution is just a "goddamn piece of paper?"
but the constitution says:
"We the People of the United States, in Order to form a more perfect Union, establish Justice, insure domestic Tranquility, provide for the common defence, PROMOTE GENERAL WELFARE, and secure the Blessings of Liberty to ourselves and our Posterity, do ordain and establish this Constitution for the United States of America."
and what the GOP calls socialism is guaranteed in the constitution and nothing could be more American.
Just like the Constitution mandates that the government be supported by the citizens through taxes in a commonweal ( the good of a community ), but the GOP thinks the founding fathers were communists.

What is so important about labels? If someone went around calling republicans neo-nazis would that do anything good for anyone?
Why not look at the issues and decide what the best policy is for the most good for the most people. And forget about the labels.

Or when Bush created the prescription coverage plan for Medicare?
Or when Bush says we're addicted to oil, need to cut gas consumption & rev up ethanol [subsidies] - which are nothing but pork?

Same reason Republicans don't see their policies as theological ones, certain policies are pushed by some members of the party, not by all. Besides, Socialism is not entirely bad considering it has routes within the Democratic party and has brought a lot of hope to countless Americans in the past. Take a look at FDR's policies during the Great Depression.

the country we live in is a little socialism, a lot of capitalism and a healthy handful of democracy.....America is great because it is a lot of things for a lot of people....Where do you think you live? In Russia, Cambodia, China ? We'll be here for a long time, if you don't learn to accept us, it'll eat you up...you would have to kill a lot of people to make America less than it is...liberals are a part of America that believes in Capitalism, protecting the Environment & protecting the workers...What do you believe in?

Because if the US public knew they were voting for socialists the Democrats would never win. They've got to hide their socialist programs with good rhetoric and the Democrats are experts at that. Just listen to John Edwards sometime. He is the master of it.
