HAve an interview with a staffing firm monday for a permanent job at a law firm that I really want. I've never used a staffing firm before- what is the protocol on this? Do you wear regular interview attire (i.e. nice business suit?) or is it more casual? And if less formal, what would you suggest? Just nice black slacks and a nice blouse or something?

Dress like you are going for an interview...wear a suit! Staffing Firms are the gate keepers for their clients (the Law Firm). Impress them and you get to move on to the next step.....the interview with the client!

God Bless

I would wear the attire that fits with the permanent job. You are representing the staffing firm when they send you to an assignment and they want to know that you will be the right person for the job which means fitting in with the law firm's other employees.

When in doubt on an interview, it never hurts to be a little over formal rather than underdressed.

Casual on a first impression means "don't take me seriously".
You want to look professional- wear a business suit in a neutral color, sedate shoes not spikes, non-patterned hose and hair/nails should look conservative. Skirt should touch knees, or pants is even better.
Accessories are important and tell a lot about you. No dangle earrings- they distract. Very little jewelry. Your belly button should never show at the office, nor should your cleavage or shoulders (apparently it needs to be said to the women I have had to interview the last few years). Have a day planner or small calendar with you (if you don't have a pda) and a file folder or case to show how organized you are. In your papers, have a extra copies of your resume, and a few prepared questions or notes about the company. Google the law firm, go on their website and learn about them so you can ask something intelligent that shows you do your homework.
Look attentive, listen, ask questions.
Double check your resume for accuracy, literacy and spelling. No one cares about your hobbies- they want your work experience and skills. If you're 22 and it's greater than one page, we file it in the circular file. If the perfume you put on it sets off my allergies, you are history. If you printed it on cheap copy paper we know you don't understand the rules. If you put your email address as "sluttybitch 69 at yahoo.com", we really don't want you representing us.
Staffing firms weed out all the things I am telling you not to do. If hired, you have the opportunity to fill in and learn the ropes- and if they like you they may just take you on.
You only have one chance to make the first impression.
Go get em, girl!!!:)
Good luck!

ALWAYS wear business attire to any job interview. No question. especially if the job is for a law firm. But even if you were applying to be a fry cook at McDonalds, you dress your best at interviews, if nothing else than as a sign of respect. Doing less suggests you don't take the job seriously.

Good Luck BTW

Dress as good as you would for an interview with an actual company and prepare MORE.

They are basically your keys to the door. If you make a good impression, they will want to send you on many interviews and for the best positions.

If you do well with them and you are looking again in the future, they will be happy to work with you and will even take your calls when you phone them.

well, i would rather be safe than sorry... i'd prefer to be over-dressed than under-dressed... so i'd personally go with a suit unless i know for SURE that i don't have to. and even if it's not necessary... u wud definately give off a better impression wearing a suit. good luck in ur interview!

I would go with a pair of dress slacks or docker style pants and a nice sweater..
( no hooded sweaters , go with a loose fitting , tight knit..not a cable knit )

I wouldnt wear a full suit..

This is how I just landed a very good job last week that I am starting monday..the HR director even complimented me on my sweater and said I was impressive...

good luck

Think about it! No-one ever lost a job to another candidate because they were "too well dressed"...

Ideally you will make your interviewer think they should have put that "better" jacket on!

Good luck...
