the line of best fit is the line that minimizes the distance (or error) between the line and the observed data points.

the most common tool in statistics to estimate this line is ordinary least squares regression.

most spreadsheet and statistical software programs will estimate this line for you. for example, if you have microsoft excel and install the data analysis (I think) add-in, it will allow you to estimate a regression model.

The line of best fit is the trend line of a scatter plot. try to draw a line in the middle of the points. the line will not hit all of the points.

you take a ruler then you put it on the grapgh and try to find where the most points are closest to the line and there are even amounts on both sides of the ruler
