In the movie Rebel Without a Cause. Why Jimmy gets mad when they call him "chicken"?

"Chicken" was a 50's term that is the same as calling a guy a "P****" in today's culture. It was a direct challenge to his manhood.

Haven't seen it in a while, so I'm going out on a limb. Well, like a lot of people, he rightfully thought they were putting him down.
