Egyptian hieroglyphics were impossible to read, because the knowledge had been lost. Lots and lots of information about Egypt and its history was contained in hieroglyphic inscriptions on temples and in tombs, but nobody knew what it said.
Most unfortunately, an author called Horapollo of the fourth century AD had written a book claiming to describe what hieroglyphics meant, and how to read them, but almost everything in it was his own imagination, and wrong. His book was lost until a copy of it was discovered in 1419, and this ruined every subsequent attempt by Renaissance scholars to decode any hieroglyphic inscriptions at all. None of them would make any sense, except for an occasional proper name.
So the Rosetta Stone, with the same text written out in hieroglyphics and in Greek which was perfectly well known, unlocked the mystery and enabled a huge amount of information to be recovered from the inscriptions.

Ok It was a stone and on it had writing of Egyptians, Greek, and another language I forgot. All of the people in Egypt forgot their language and it got lost so archeologists couldn't read the writing on the tombs or walls. The rosetta stone had the same writing in 3 different languages inclusind Egyptian so one greek decoded egyptian language by reading the greek part.

The rosetta stone was found near Rosetta, Egypt. Rosetta is near Cairo, it has writing in ancient hyroglyphics as well as the same writing but in greek. So they used the greek to interpret the hyroglyphs. Cool huh?
