What kind of car is it? Do the lights come on nice and bright and stay bright when you try to start it?

IF the lights stay bright and seems to be good power from the battery, it could be an igntion switch or key-cylinder causing the problem. Could also be an ignition relay or starter relay or something like that.

Is the battery charged? Do the lights come on? A volt meter should read 12.5 or better. Check the connections to make sure that they are all tight and clean. Have you tried jump starting it? That might tell you if the starter is working and if your battery is low. New batteries may or may not be charged when you get them.

alternaters got nothing to do with the car starting or cranking. if you put a fully charged battery in a car, and it wont turn over, (or crank)., then its starter or starter connections, or wiring, or solenoid. everyone wants to automatically blame an alternator right off. the alternators job is keep a full charge in the battery, and to run the car when heavy current demands. it will not affect the starting, or short term running.

you might need a new starter or an alternator. Might want to have your mechanic look at it for you and see whats wrong with it.
