It means that the person is a partner based upon capital account in a partnership rather than a "partner in name only" or "income partner" as often is the case in professional services firm. The income partner gets a salary and maybe a bonus. The equity partner participates in profits in proportion to his or her equity interest in the firm.

An equity partner is someone who supplies money to a venture for a peice of the company in return.

The other type of partner is the one who runs the business, day in and day out.

one supplies the money to get the busness running or expanded, the other does the work
