I would not get anything that eats crickets- they need to be fed every day to every other day. If you are gone for the occasional weekend, that is ok, but they can not do all that well for a couple days without food.
Snakes work out great. You can take them out once a month and they will still act the same- and you don't have to feed them often, just make sure they have water. Make sure you get a people friendly one like a cornsnake, and one that eats dead pinkies or larger already. I would stay away from the larger or more difficult breeds b/c they tend to bite if they aren't handled enough.

Depends on what you like. Reptiles cover a lot of territory, snakes, lizards, turtles. Just pick one you like. They could all go a couple days without eating and not suffer any ill effects, and if you load the cage up with food before you bug out, they won't even notice you're gone!

You should get a California King snake, or an Eastern King snake would do just fine. They are very docile, and tame. You only have to feed them about once every week. I feed my snake two small mice every week. Don't forget to take good care of it, and make sure you don't over feed it, or underfeed it. DO NOT UNDER ANY CIRCUMSTANCE PUT PINE OR CEDAR BEDDING. It causes harmful damage to their intestines, and they most likey will die. When you buy your snake, ask the pet store employee which size mice (or rats) to feed it for the snakes size.

How about a low care lizard or gecko. They are cool to look at and they don't take a lot of work. They are fun to play with too.

i think you should get a turtle. i prefer dogs but i don't think it would work in your case. i think you should get a turtle because they are cute, don't scare people such as snakes do, and are easy to maintain.
