I have a 96 Nissan Maxima with 130,000 miles on it. My Transmission just went out on it I think I can get it fixed for about $700. The former owner had just put $800 into it to fix the clutch and front axel. It also needs 4 new tires and a new battery. I don't have two have two cars but it does make life simpler. Should I put the mont into the car or just get rid of it?

I would Nissan cars are usually good $700 is not too much compared to buying another car and you might have problems again with that one.

I'd take it back to the guy that did the clutch job. Standard trannys don't wear out unless they've been abused or run without oil. Or installed incorrectly after a clutch/CV axle job. Makes me go Hmmmmm.....

If the body/interior is in good shape I'd consider fixing it. If its an ugly paint/shot interior car with no resale value, then dump it.

How's the engine?? As the engine goes, so goes the car. If it runs well, no smoke, radiator healthy, time left on timing belt, exhaust good, etc it may be worth saving. If the engine is about shot, then push the car off a cliff right now and don't look back.

It depends where you live and who you know. We live in Tennessee and you can pick up a car for for 1000 almost always. But cars seem to have problems around 100,000 miles or so on all other parts. But I would ask a couple of local mechanics what they thought. It the car is clean 900 more dollars in a car isn't that much. One thing to watch out for is if they price could go up if they find more things wrong with it as it is being fixed.

If you fix it up to a point that it is reliable, then keep it. I'm currently fixing up my 86 Z-28 as a second car, new transmission, engine, front end, ect. and people say i'm crazy, but I love it. Since the engine has 130,000 your going to need to replace it soon, plus the initial $1,000.00 your putting in now, so is this car worth it?
Good luck, and don't let the car become a money pit.

You're finding out why it's usually not a good idea to pour money into an 11 year old car. There are still lots of things ready to wear out in it, and you could be pouring money into it forever. The transmission, tires and battery will run you half of what that car's worth to start.

Your talking a good $1000 for the trans and tires and battery..... if your going to get alot of use out of the car i would fix it, but if it is a second car you dont really need, then sell it.
