still engaged in pre-marital sex?

We really need to make sure that schools are teaching other forms of safe sex(including abstinence)

has being taught abstinence worked for you?

I agree. Schools do need to teach all different forms of safe sexual practices.

It is naive to think that teaching abstinence alone is going to keep the majority of teenagers from engaging in pre-martial sex. For one, not everyone is religious and even disagrees with it. For two, peer pressure, etc....

Kinda odd how some legislatures only want abstinence taught in schools but at the same time want it to be a requirement to have the new cervical cancer vaccination.... that is sexually transmitted.

I was not taught "abstinence" in the current sense of the word (meaning that spurious school program), but rather just a sense of responsibility by my parents (and I don't mean "morals"). They never specifically said,"don't have sex." Like in the Netherlands, it was more a matter of personal responsibility.

I had pre-marital sex. Responsible, safe sex. I never got an STD nor did I get any girls pregnant, although it's not like I was a gigolo, for God's sake.

In a short time, I met an equally "responsible" woman and we enjoyed a good amount of sex before eventually getting married (and NOT because she became pregnant).

It would be ideal if all parents would take responsibility for teaching their children COMPLETELY about sex, but unfortunately, they DON'T. And THAT is why schools teach it - for better or worse.

And one of the reasons people still mature in this day and age with sexual dysfunctions is because of the crap that some of the parents feed them regarding sex.

I had a great experience. i went to an all girls catholic school. St. Paul's HS in the mission district of San Francisco. Although the nuns gave a speech for a whole day on abstinence and gave us all pretty white rosemary beads.

The principal nun was quite radical in 1991. she had the advanced bio class student each do a presentation on several different contraceptives. they were too many girls getting pregnant and we needed that information. being told the Church believes this, but we also feel you need the other information too was awesome. i have always been grateful for that experience.

i want schools to teach safe sex, all forms. without stigma or judgement. A mandatory parenting class would be good too.

yes i like to have a lot of sex with different people and i am divorced now.

I wasn't taught anything except the basic mechanics and biology - what I *learned I picked up in the library and in the bookstore.

Kids need to have all the information, once the decision has been made to tell them something. If they find out later you didn't tell them everything, your credibility goes down the toilet.

Teaching abstinence only does just that.

Answer is yes; but no more and I am a single woman. However, in regards to your follow up question...I don't think sex should be taught in the schools, it should be taught in the churches, cause this is a 10 commandments thing and deals with our souls as well. Abstinence should be the only thing taught and pounded into our kids minds, as well as at home, and in society.

This is not the real issue. The real issue is teaching your children morals. Raise your children correctly and they will be able to make the correct decisions. Teach them abstinence, safe sex, etc, that doesn't matter. It won't affect their decisions. They won't be thinking about what Mommy and Daddy said when they're alone with their girlfriend for the first time. Teach your kids morals when they're young, and there won't be STDs on every street corner.

I wasnt taught abstinence only a foolish person would teach their children that and my parents arent fools.
Nor is it the responsibility of a school to teach a teenager about sex that should be the parents job.

well its a foundation. its something we can build on despite if everyone ignores it. we know that it works 100% but we also know that everybody flesh is weak. so to make the answer short, yes they should be teaching alternatives to safe sex but at the same time inform them that abstinence is 100% safe.

Abstinence does not work - even cuter are the kids that take the vow of abstinence and practice other forms of sex with their partner. Sex is sex kiddos!

No, it didn't work for me, but being taught that there could potentially be consequences even with having safe sex helped me think about what I was doing before did it. (Personal Responsibility).
