Right now I think I have about 256, it only shows 192 on the system when I pull it up, but the store we purchased it from says that it has over 200... I really don't know. We had the Notebook completely redone because it crashed.

My laptop has always been slow. I use my computer for uploading pictures from my digital camera. I have a few photo editing programs. Itunes/Mp3's, Ipod. Basically, my computer is used for fun and I don't really have many programs on here because it's already slow enough.

I don't know if I should go with a Gig or 512MB. What do you all suggest? Thanks.

First, it depends on the notebook. If it can support 1GB, then it might be the better option. But there are other factors too.

The version of Windows, for example, matters as well. Only Windows 2000 or XP are suitable for large amounts of RAM. Next, you want to make sure you have a notebook that has at least a 1.5GHz P4 or better CPU. Otherwise, more than 512MB won't really matter since there are other bottlenecks in your system.

As for the difference in size that you're seeing (192MB) has to do with shared VIDEO memory. Your integrated video card on the laptop's motherboard is using 64MB. That's why your 256MB of memory is showing up as 192MB in Windows. That's how the laptop was designed, and there's nothing you should worry about there.

If your laptop is less than 3 years old and you have Windows XP, then yes, it might be worth moving up to a GB. The most important thing, however, is to make sure you take care when installing new programs or downloading crap off the internet. Make backups using a program like Acronis TrueImage. So if one day you're laptop starts running slow, you can go back to a saved backup when things were fine.

Gotta go with at least 1 GB. Vista's gonna need it.
If you have an MP3 that's got 2 or 4 GB's then you should at least have 1 Gig for your laptop.
Try to find one with at least 80 GB Hard drive also.

If you have the option of A gig go for it...
It's worth the money and will last you so much longer.
Not to mention the vast difference in speed.

The way technology will evolve it's always better to go for the best while you can.

you might put 1GB or 512MB or 256MB in but looks like the MAX your computer can go is at 192MB only no matter how big you put in. Read back the manual or go to the manufacturer's website to check your models capacity.Have fun with it , if not buy a new one.

I can happen that, because of some shared memory, you could be down to 192Mb available after booting up. You want as much memory as you can get, generally. So, if your machine can use 1Gb DIMMS, by all means, if you can afford them, buy that much.
