A utility knife works the best for me. They are more durable than box cutters which are flimsy and for some harder cardboard boxes they will flex which is a hazard. It also has many uses for instance wrapping presents way faster than scissors, even edgeing the lawn and clearing the unwanted groth between concrete cracks.

A razor/box cutter, but if the cardboard is to thick, a reciprocating saw or jigsaw works very well.
