just to refute an earlier answer, i was taught that one of his hands are open and if you view his face from the side its softer and represents his kinds and whatnot, but the other hand is a clenched fist to indicate that he was not afraid to go to war to preserve the union and if you view him from that side his face apears sterner. also on the back of his head is supposed to be and abstraction of the face of either lee or davis, i forget, its hard to see seeing as he sits less than 2 feet from a wall.
