Today I was driving my trusty old 1992 Lumina 3.1 coupe. Their was nobody on the high way but me for what seamed like miles so I thought why not lets se how fast I can get this thing up to so with my GPS mounted to my windshield (this is my speedometer because the speedometer in the car only goes up to 85) I opened up the throttle from a 60 mph role and away I went I was able to max out at 120 MPH in only like 10 sec. My car is only a 3 speed!. Best of all it handled VERY well at that speed no swaying or floating the car just stuck to the road like glue it felt like I was doing 60 mph thats how good the ride was at that speed. Any way my question is why did chevy put a speed oniter with a tope speed of only 85 and not 110 or 120?. I don't speed all the time I just wanted to see if the car could only do 85 mph.

If it takes my car 10 sec to reach 120 mph from a rolling start of 60 mph that is considered fast?

Legal issues with any state. The accuracy of your GPS is in question compared to a speedo. Tire size also needs to be regular size to get an accurate reading.
Guess you were lucky a dog , or a deer or a cow wasn't on the road at the time eh? Let alone the odd pot hole. I don't think your stopping abilities are that good. Another DOA.(hospital talk)
Blow a tire at that speed = DOA
My car speedo goes to 315, I am not that dumb to go there I will take a plane thank you

Back then all auto manufacturers put speedos that only went up to 85MPH because it was thought that when the needle starts going to the high side, there is a subconscious little tick in most people not to push it much further than that, therefore reducing the tendency to speed. Later when it was understood that if people want to speed they will anyway, they started installing speedos that went up higher.

What matters the maximum speed limit in the states I've seen is 75MPH, why have a speedometer go any higher than the legal speed limit. Same reason they make cars that go 200MPH+ I guess.
Death wish anybody.

thats back when they lowered the speed limit to 55 on all roads and GM did that to deter people from speeding back then, if the speedo says 120 some people will just have to find out if it will do it.

I agree with the above. Plus, changing tire size will throw off your speedometer.
