I use the smiley :) in emails -- to show that I am smiling about something. For instance, if I type, "I HATE you!" I would put a smiley face next to it so they know I'm kidding. Women maybe do this more because they show emotion more? I don't know -- that was a very stereotypical statement I just made. On second thought, your question was a little bit stereotypical, too. :)

To make it easier for men. We write smileys so that they know when we are serious or happy. You know how confusing girls can be. It is hard to understand the mood someone is in by just reading their words in print so smileys help emotion flow and give guys a clue so they don't say something stupid.

I never do it because it never looks right. I always seem to put something in the wrong place and it looks like ): and that just doesn't make much sense, although it kind of looks like a frown.

I think it's more a generational thing than a gender thing. But, annoying as it is, I think people find it necessary, since the internet is pretty bad with tone. It's easy to misread people's mood or intent without physical cues.

lol...well..its kindof like..when we dont know how else to express ourselves or idk..just..how to describe how we are feeling..we use it..
for example..
when im nervous...or there is "awkward silence"..i will use a smily face...
but this differs for alot of women.....this is just my excuse =]
