Well if you haven't seen a doctor how do you know its not sleep apnea? Most people don't notice sleep apnea because the only way you would know is if you woke up a lot during the night. Maybe you have insomnia. Perhaps you have an alcohol problem, that interferes with sleep as well. Go to the doctor because not sleeping at night for 7-8 hrs isn't normal. Your doctor may prescribe some medication for you depending on the reason why you cannot sleep. Hope I helped! Good luck.

Several things, but you may need to push your doc...
1. Sleep Study- It may not be apnea...it could be something as weird as Restless Leg Syndrome...I have it and never thought it.
2. Medication- Rozerem 8 mg is a non-habit forming sleep medication that is very new and so far, so good. Lunesta is also a great medication and comes in 2mg and 3mg tablets. Ask for samples so that you can try each medication before you actually buy it. Do not use Ambien. It has a lot of side effects.
3. Relaxation Techniques- Either he/she can help you or refer you to a therapist.
4. Make sure that you do NOT nap during the day.
5. It's difficult to see if you worry a lot, or just why you can't sleep. Look at what you do during the day. Lots of coffee, pop, etc.??? Do you have a stressful life??? Do you eat late? There's a lot that goes into it.
Good Luck!!!!

How is that you you know it's NOT sleep apnea? WIthout a full sleep study, you can't know this. WIth a full sleep study, any number of sleep problems, including apnea, can be identified. Once identified, if there is something that can help, it will be prescirbed for you.
It starts, however, with that sleep study.

He'll probably prescribe one of the newer sleep meds that are on the market such as Lunesta or Ambien. Also make you cut down on your caffeine intake.
