Good question!
Somewhere along the last 20 yrs or so it seems the American Dream I grew up with in the 60s, working hard, saving $$ for a home, enjoying life w a mate & ...... morphed into an expectation of all of it NOW!!
A six figure income upon graduation from college , luxury vehicle, vacation home......maybe the excess of the 80s...
I think the things taught in schools, & the manner in which they are taught has contributed. When I was in 5th grade we were expected to know not onlt the Pres & vp, but the cabinet by name.
It's incredible now how many folks young & old have no idea on who the VP is.....& they see no resaon to know. What's the electoral college??
And w all the great resources & instant access to answers, the fine line between truth & opinion has gone way past blurred. They couldn't say it on the internet if it wasn't true, right?
A question here yesterday asked,"If Geico & Esurance are the lowest, it must be true we've been getting overcharged for insurance."
Any business offering a product or service must be ripping people off if they make a profit.....w no understanding of the concept that a business by definition MUST make a profit to be a business.
The DREAM is still very much alive!! But it still requires some initiative, commitment , & yes hard work. Oh yeah, you have to be optimistic enough to dream & not let negative people steal the dream.
Late edit- Save the racist garbage about blacks infesting....
1) When did the dream include a killing on the market? And I'm a broker & see folks w over $1 mill lose money on stocks just kije anyone
Want a house save your money, buy a used car, cancel cable & cell phone, if you want it you'll sacrifice.
What has the Patriot Act or GITMO got to do w it? Were YOU detained at GITMO?
Don't believe it true just because you have a link!!

This just scratches the surface
Dream 1. Making A Killing On The Market
In 1970 a formula was discovered that would guarantee you never lose playing the stock market. The trick is you need at least $500,000.00 to make it work. Therefore, the average citizen hasn't a hope of "making a killing on the market"

Dream 2. A house in the suburbs.
Don't need to say much about this. If you make less than $60,000.00/ year just forget it.
Dream 3. With Liberty And Justice For All
a. I give the Patriot Act, GITMO and all the crooked politicians
b. "...about one out of every six federal inmates is in federal prison for marijuana. That's a very large number. There are more people now in federal prison for marijuana offenses than for violent offenses."

c. And check out the crime stats

Dream 4. The Strength of America is it's middle class

Dream 5. Anyone can become President.
You got me there. Apparently anyone CAN become President as long as they are rich and well connected to the Saudi Royal Family.
Dream 6. Education and health care for all:
Puh-Lease

Despite warnings from men such as Thomas Jefferson, Patrick Henry, and John C. Calhoun, the federal government grew too large and took away "Life, Liberty, and the Pursuit of Happiness".
