rats love the sewers, so many things to eat , and nice dark places to breed and bear young. but its with out a doubt that the constant flow of things routinely flushed that fuel there rapid growth. That coupled with the lack of any serious competition for food or living space, its perfect habitat

rats dont eat so much in the sewer but instead use the sewers as a place to hide and dwell and to emerge from at the choice locations like fast food chains and other dives and actually use the sewer like a highway free from predators , prying eyes and cars that can squish them .
that leaves them a virtuall maze to run and they remember where the best dumpsters are and know where in the sewer they can pop up at to score a good meal , wich houses have messy wastfull food wasting habitants that offer them free meals and a warm place to stay after they chew thier way into such dwellings...
do you really think theres food that is palitable in the sewers especially when it comes from in the most part from waste water polluting sources and some ones butt ? mixed with household chemicals fertalizers and god knows what ? i dont think that would be the first choice of rats for a meal either .
if the nations homeless people can survive if needfull as some do simply by visiting the numerous resturants scattered about and cherry picking the perfectly good food thrown into the trash for sustainance just think of how well the rats are doing dining upon the very same thing .. thier just sharing king sized portions in comparison .. and eyeballing your stinky garbage can and deciding whiether or not your a big enough slob to housecrash like the cockroaches did to joes apartment...
sleep well and clean your house and get a steel garbage can and close the lid ..... in essence if theres an unlimited supply of food wich there is if your a rat they will grow and breed and thier will be big fat sewer rats as a result ...

because there are chemicals in the sewer that cause the rats which feed of what floats in the sewer to grow

They have everything they need to survive there...so they become HUGEEE...eww sewer rats....yuck
