The only sure way is an X-ray. Swelling and bruising can happen with either sprains or breaks. Rest, ice, compression, elevation... then, if it still hurts, go see a doctor.

The best way to do is to get an x-ray, but the first aid for a sprain, which we are hoping it is, is P.R.I.C.E.: Protect- put a splint, Rest- don't move it around, Ice- apply as soon as possible (be careful not to use for too long; it can damage tissues), Compress- elastics found in drugstores or pharmacies, Elevate- to prevent or limit swelling. On the other hand, if it is much more severe than that like broken, do the same procedure, but make sure to go straight to the doctor to prevent further injuries.
