a farmer has a rectangular garden. What is the PERIMETER of the garden?

~the area of the garden is 72 square meters
~the width and length of the garden are whole # of meters
~the # of meters arround the garden is a multiple of 9
~the number of meters arround the garden is not a mutiple of 4

please show your work or tell me what you did to solve the problem.
THANK YOU

okay the area is 72 square meters

so... draw a rectangle, x on the short side, y on the long side

xy = 72

the perimeter would be 2x + 2y

2x + 2y has to be easily divisible by 9 but not by four

what are the multiplying factors of 72?
what could x and y be?

Factors of 72: (2, 36) (4, 18) (8, 9) (3, 24)

try inputing each of those numbers into the 2x + 2y formula...

the only ones that work that will be divisible by 9 and not 4 is
(3, 24)

so the perimeter would be 54 meters!

Since you know that the area of the garden (something times something) is 72 AND that the numbers are whole numbers, think first of factors of 72:
1 and 72
2 and 36
3 and... so on.

Once you've done that, figure out what the perimeter (the meters around the garden) is of each set of numbers (so, 1 and 72 will have a perimeter of 1 + 72 + 1 + 72) and circle all results that are multiples of 9. Then eliminate all multiples of 4. You should then have your answer.

The perimeter is 54.

I tried 8+8+9+9, but it didn't work because then it is a multiple of 4.
So i tried 12 and 6. that didn't work because 12+12+6+6=36.
Then i tried 24 times 3. 24+24+3+3=54. And 54 is not a multiple of 4, but it is a multiple of 9. Also the width and the length are whole numbers.

did that help?

X * Y =(area) square meters
X * Y = 72
9 * 8 = 72

X + X + Y+ Y= Perimeter
9+9+8+8=34

unless it is not actually a rectangle. not sure what you mean by # of meters around the garden (perimeter?)
