YES!!!!!!!!!!!! Most welfare programs are a big fat waste of hard-earned money. They only encourage people to become unproductive adults. With every new program initiated, I fear we are coming closer to being socialist. Good question and points.

1. "Welfare" (though there is no such govt. program by that name) is only about 2% of the federal budget. We currently pay at least three times that in interest alone on the national debt. Therefore, I think we shouldn't get so worked up about the whole thing.
2. A low-level safety net actually encourages entrepreneurial risk-taking, as it ensures that if a business venture fails, at least your children won't starve. In addition, since most of the money goes to kids (70+%), it is helping to ensure that we have a healthy and capable workforce in the future. Kids who don't eat don't pay attention in school.
Given these points, then, I think that 2% of our budget is money well spent. Plus, I don't think it's morally acceptable to let a child starve in America.

1. Not unless you want to become a 3rd world country where you pass families living under bridges as you drive to work.
2. A friend of mine that is single recently went to a faith based program for help paying her rent. SHe was declined so she telephoned the church member in charge... she was informed because she had no children, she was not selected for help. Gov. controlled help doesn't discriminate like this.
3. There is no such thing any longer as lifelong welfare. It is a max of 2 to 5 years in a lifetime.

Do you really think churches and private charities would pick up that much slack? So you think it is okay for our country to send billions of dollars in aid to other countries, for politicians to vote themselves pay raises and you want to stop helping our own people? Nice....real nice.

Churches? I am actually a religious man man, but Organized Crime, I mean Organized Religion?
How do we know they just won't build giant Church Complexes, (IE Megachurches) when they 'pick up the slack'?

Great idea! And as the roving armies of baby boomers are rioting and pillaging and burning, your name will be remembered as the one who started it all.
