We have heard since Bush took office that how important military service is to be a good president.
Since McCain is a vet and POW and the democrates don't have a single vet in the front running.
That has to mean they have to vote for McCain is sure thing right?

There is no chance I'd vote for McCain. It doesn't make that much of a difference that he served in the military. If as you stated serving in the military is a prerequisite to being president, then what about George W. Bush?

I think most conservatives have heard those comments as replies to the bashing they do about Clinton and Kerry regarding military service. Bill avoided it and George worked the system of favoritism to do next to nothing in Vietnam and be released from National Guard duty early. I'm not sure which is worse, but I have to disagree with you that liberals have been the ones to put so much emphasis on military experience. They cite the lack of it in George Bush to defend their own position when their party is attacked on the issue. I like McCain, and I might have considered supporting him if I hadn't started to notice, just like a good many people, that he waffles on who and what he is supporting to please whichever conservatives happen to be listening. His stand on Iraq is going to cause him a lot of trouble. Six months ago I would have said he's the only one that can keep the Democrats from taking the White House in '08. But now, I don't believe even he can do that. I know I'm voting Democratic, as a moderate Independent, and I'm hoping it will be Hillary Clinton that I'm voting for. The only Republican out there that might be able to swing the White House is Colin Powell. Now there's a candidate I could get behind very quickly. But unfortunately for all of us he is not running.

I'm a liberal and military service is actually becoming LESS important to most Americans. Look at the Kerry/Bush distinction for an example.

I, for one, think that McCain lost most liberals a few years ago when he blindly backed Bush on almost all of his initiatives. I only liked his anti-torture stance. McCain is a turn-coat.

I'm also from Arizona.

Obviously, making military service central to a campaign is stupid, Democrats learned that in '04. Some people cared, more didn't, and then it blew up in Kerry's face.

I'm sure some apolitical, Vietnam veteran, dyed in the wool Democrats will vote for McCain because of his military service.

This won't be a huge issue though, at least it won't siphon many votes from the Democrats.

No I don't. I think some liberals will vote for him, but he lost a lot of credibility when he caved on the torture issue. He is a good man though and has demonstrated composure under fire and he seems to have a good sense of humor.

I am registered democrat, but I hope whoever wins is a pragmatic, free-thinker who doesn't think party first, country second.

Cheers!

Nope. At one time it was possible that I would vote for McCain. Now he's George Bush's lapdog. The more he kisses Bush's butt, the more respect I lose for him.

Are you serious? It would be ignorant to vote for a candidate just because he/she has or has not served in the military. This should be one of the last considerations when placing a vot.

McCain is the most liberal Republican. So they probably would.
