Have you ever read the "Tomorrow when the War Began" books?
They are by Australian author John Marsden. The series of seven books are considered to be the most 'celebrated and widely recognised books of Australian literature'. (wikipedia)
And trust me, they are. They were publised from 1994 till 1999, and probably every high school in Australia and New Zealand studied them in English classes.
They are about a group of 7 teenage friends who go camping one summer in the bush, and when they come out again a week later, Australia has been invaded and their whole town has been taken over.
The books are about how they cope over the next few years and fight back. They are very sad in places, very violent, and includes quite a bit of death. But if you get the chance, (i'm not sure where you are from, and if you can get them) i totally recommend you read them. They are amazing.

It isn't mystery or horror(my favorite, too) but an excellent book is Wideacre, by Phillipa Gregory.
It is about a woman in England who stands to lose Wideacre Hall, her beloved home, because she is a woman. You won't be able to put it down to see what malevolent scheme she comes with next to retain it. An awesome novel. There are two sequels to it, but they don't even compare to the first one. A definite can't put it down read.

These books are for 10 year olds, but I still think they're somewhat exciting.Try reading fear street, not goosebumps, but fear street, by R.L. Stine. They're real good and always have a surprise ending.

Anything by Chuck Palahniuk- I think Choke is my favorite.
David Sedaris is also excellent- but he doesn't write fiction.
Oh Irvine Welsh- Trainspotting and Porno.
