Why is there such a negative response to an article of clothing? Men have historically worn leggings for a longer period of time than women. Is fashion bigotry the last bastion of the closed minded in our society? Must we all march lock step in the way we have been trained to view how the human body is presented? Look exactly as prescribed by the fashionistas or leave the planet? What about evolutionary progress as we wear form fitting clothing for "smart clothing" and "wearable electronics and computers" of the future?

I would say that people are reacting negatively because they are STUPID. Leggings aren't typically a masculine piece of clothing in today's society. You brought up a very valid point thought that men have traditionally worn leggings more prevalently than women. Some of the world's most powerful leaders and royals rocked the leggings. But in today's society they are associated with femininity, so to take a feminine item and place it on a man would inevitably make him look "gay" (as is evident by previous answers). Personally, I say go for it, but it will be difficult to carry off. Women can wear skirts and shorts over their leggings, while men would have to wear a baggy sweater or shirt to hide his junk. People are pretty scared of non-conformists though. I saw a guy the other day walking down the street in a black, utility style kilt which he looked awesome in. There was a group of fat, sports team clad tourists that looked like slobs being audibly rude to him but they were the ones that looked atrocious!

I used to dance. Part of the dress code was, tights or leggings and leg warmers or slouch socks.

I still wear that stuff, now that it's winter. I wear it all with a smile. 'Cause by morning it will be just 5 deg. F. I've got it laid out tights, stir up leggings, sweat pants, jeans, 3 pair of socks. I'm not gonna be cold!!!

Why not? Women wear men's clothing everyday (pants) so why is it so bad for a man to wear something that is supposed to be worn by women? Why can't a man wear a skirt if a woman can wear pants?

If you want to wear them, go for it. No one is stopping you. As far as fashion is concerned, its allbunk. Its a way to sell more clothes. Stick with the classics or you'll look like an idot in 3 months wearing your poncho.

Follow up to ...Fashion's latest...? Leggings for men??? Why is there such a negative reaction to the idea?

Umm.... because I'm heterosexual.:)

Seriously, you ever hear of the cod piece.

The last time it was fashionable cod pieces grew and grew in a "Mine's so big I need this extra large cod piece" You want to start that crap again?

FU, I prefer clothes that are sensible. Leave the insensible clothes for women. (C'mon ladies, is a mini-skirt and pumps sensible?)

If your scotish go ahead and wear the skirts or what ever.
Leggings are not in for men out here in california. Men dont wear caprees or tights they wear baggy pants or baggy shorts. And now that women wear them it is odd for men to wear them

Well I guess people are so negitive about it because since woman started wearing them as one of the biggest trends it seems odd that now a man would. It makes perfect sense to me why people don't like them though. Men don't have curves and also they don't where a skit with it so it is kinda gross.

cuz it just looks gay.
it doesn't in the high end fashion world, like you know how those runway models come on the runway with makeup that is more like a mask and dramatic clothes? well it looks great on the runway and magazine, but if anyone dresses like that on the streets, you would think they were crazy. same with leggings, it's a trend, but it doesn;t seem right to see a man with leggings on the streets.
