I actually saw it for the first time last night, as I have heard good reviews about this movie countless times. I thought it was a great story about the human spirit. I also liked the way Red narrated the movie. What do you think?

That movie is amazing. Tim Robbins and Morgan Freeman are just undeniably wonderful in the film. I could watch that movie again and again. It's got a little of everything: drama, tragedy, comedy, love, hate.....it's what a great film should be.

"I have no idea to this day what those two Italian ladies were singing about. Truth is, I don't want to know. Some things are best left unsaid. I'd like to think they were singing about something so beautiful, it can't be expressed in words, and makes your heart ache because of it. I tell you, those voices soared higher and farther than anybody in a gray place dares to dream. It was like some beautiful bird flapped into our drab little cage and made those walls dissolve away, and for the briefest of moments, every last man in Shawshank felt free."

Did you know it was based on a novella by Stephen King, "Rita Hayworth and the Shawshank Redemption"?

I'm going against the grain on this one. I think that movie outright SUCKS. Allow me to explain. First off....there are scenes that are taken whole cloth from the film Escape From Alcatraz. The mouse in Escape from Alcatraz becomes a bird in Shawshank. The whole movie struck me as being an over dramatized Escape From Alcatraz. Where Escape From Alcatraz was subtle and hinted at things, Shawshank beat you over the head with it.

It was a manipulative film what didn't rely on it's acting or story to show its themes, it relied on over done narraration. The truth about narraration is that it's a lazy tool for not editing or reshooting things that you got wrong. The rule in film is show me. Narraration TELLS me. It doesn't work. It's extremely rare for narraration to enhance films (exceptions are Usual Suspects, American Splendor, and Stand By Me), and it sure as hell did NOT enhance Shawshank. The film was also a solid half an hour too long.

Did we really need the final scene where they meet on the beach? It should have ended with Freeman leaving prison and getting on the bus. We didn't need to see the reunion. That should have been left to the imagination. I probably would have ended it with him about to open the box. Leave it to the imagination...is the gun in there? Was he actually guilty all along? Does it matter if he was guilty?

The only thing this movie had going for it was a fantastic cast that had a lot of energy and chemistry. Freeman and Robbins really worked together. The problem is the film stunk. Watch Escape From Alcatraz and you'll see what i'm talking about.

I loved the movie - one of Stephen King's great 'non-horror' novels. Morgan Freeman is one of my favourite actors.

Yes absolutely, one of the best.

I love the ending when they are free.

It is awesome when Tim Robbins has completely outsmarted the soulless warden.

I love it, and it is very well though of, too. It appears as No 2 in the imdb.com list of greatest films of all time.

I think it has a very positive message about never giving up.

Pretty good, except for the 'magic *****'. I like Morgan Freeman just fine, but I get tired of the 'magic *****' crap that Hollywood always shoves down our throats. Good flick, though.

Absolutely awesome flick. I like the way that he survives and bides his time when others would fold. They could take damn near everything away from him, and he patiently implemented his plan.
