Guinea Pigs are social animals. But they can live with out a partner, as long as they receive a lot of attention from their owners, otherwise they can become depressed and die from it. If the owner can't provide the attention needed for a single Guinea Pig then it is better to get more then one.

As long as you play with your guinea pig regularly and leave toys for them to play with while your out, they should be perfectly fine. I have a guinea pig right now who is by herself, but i play with her regularly and she has a bird toy she can chew on so it's not so bad. Two Male guinea pigs COULD fight, and a male and a female would try to breed. Two females are fine. If you do get another guinea pig, introduce it SLOWELY. Make sure you watch all play time between the two. My vet recomended that I keep them in seperate cages until they get to know eachother.
I hope this helped!

I cant say if they are better alone or not but I can say that unless you want babies then dont put the opposite gender together. Some males tend to fight and some females also so I would suggest talking to an employ at your local petstore to see if that certain species tends to fight or be aggressive.
Hope I could help

P.S. They might just be saying that to her so that she or you will feel inclined to get another one.

We had one alone and she seemed to do fine, but they do seem to be happier in pairs. It's not even that much of a difference financiallly to have 2 compared to one. You can have just one if you let it out to play very often.
