Since a groundhog hibernates for the winter, its coming out of the ground is a natural sign of spring. In Europe centuries ago, people watched for other hibernating animals, including badgers, bears, and hedgehogs, as signs of winter's end. Germans who immigrated to Pennsylvania in the mid-1800s began keeping an eye on the groundhog. The widespread population of the rodent made it a handy agent for this particular weather superstition. (Punxsutawney Phil in Pa.)
If Punxsutawney Phil sees his shadow, he goes back into his hole for another 6 weeks, if the day is cloudy and he does not see his shadow he remains out, predicting the weather to be seasonable but moderate.
So far Punxsutawney Phil has seen his shadow 85% of the time, thus predicting us 6 more weeks of winter.

Groundhog's Day is February 2nd.
This is based on a old folk custom. If the groundhog sees his shadow- winter will last 6 more weeks. If he doesn't see his shadow, spring will come early.
The most famous "Groundhog" spot is in Punxsutawney, PA.
There is a lot of fun surrounding the day. Special festivals, parties, etc. This is something to do to beat the winter blahs.
There are other parts of the country (US) that have their own groundhog. In Ohio it's Buckeye Chuck.
Groundhog Day is also a movie starring Bill Murray and Andie McDowell.

Feb 2 - the day someone in Puxatawney PA takes a fat groundhog outside to determine if he sees his shadow. It's a traditional rite of spring. If Puxatawney Phil (the ground hog's "name") sees his shadow, he goes back into his imaginary hole and there will be 6 more weeks of winter. I don't know the origin of this or the correct spelling of Puxatawney.

Groundhog Day is a US version of a traditional European festival day. Candlemas? Is that the name? It's about the same time as a Celtic Pagan festival, Imbolc/Imbolg (spelling varies.)
The thing was, if the groundhog sees its shadow on Feb. 2, you get 6 more weeks of winter. I don't know why. You'd think that if it were cloudy and nasty, winter would last longer. But shadow=6 more weeks of winter. No shadow (overcast day)=early spring.
Watch the movie Groundhog Day. It's grrrrreat!

Groundhog Day is the day that the little ground hog sticks his head out of his hole after his winter nap. It is said that if he sees his shadow then there will be six more weeks of winter weather, if he doesn't see his shadow there will be an early spring. This day happens every year on Feb. 2.

bill Murray is one among my maximum favoritest actors, yet i've got not viewed Groundhog Day in a protracted time. i admire the area whilst they finally verify that throwing water on the groundhogs in basic terms makes them multiply.
