Hi the white German is Shepherd is exactly the same as the coloured GSD, no they are not recognised here in England by the kennel club, as it is not a breed standard lay down by the kennel club for breeders to breed a good dog.
as for varing colours there are a few, the white is great and I have seen them advertised in the dog mags, also there is the navy blue GSD also not recognised, and the black, I have a golden GSD, he is nearly 9 a long coat this as well is frowned upon by the kennel club, I have seen these different colours in various mags, that where I got my boy from, they do sometimes come up a little cheaper than their royal litter mates, but not always, where I got my boy from he specialised in golden GSD.
hope I have been of some help

The reason why white GSD's aren't recognised is because the coat colour is linked to the deafness gene. For a long time, white pups were prone to deafness which is why they weren't bred from. Its considered a fault.
They then became popular. Some breeders tried to breed out the deafness gene. Inbreeding for whiteness but not deafness can produce other problems in a strain as one of the other posters has mentioned.

They really are no different from the other colours, you just prefer the colour. Theres nothing wrong with that, its the reason some breeds are the colour they are. There are two different strains of corgi and newfoundland; each with its own distinctive colour.

Actually, the United Kennel Club here in the US recognizes white GSD's as "White Shepherds".

It's important to understand that German Shepherds were created for a distinct purpose: to herd livestock and to protect their families. I'm not trying to be nasty, but white coat coloration is, in essense, a defect. No ethical German Shepherd breeder will purposefully breed for white coat coloration, and most would spay or neuter any dog that produces white puppies.

I happen to have a white german sherperd and she is the best little fog ever! Black and tan sheperds tend to shed mroe then white sheperds and are slightly smaller too. She is a very protective and friendly dog and gets along with other dogs and she is friendly to most people (except the hobos that come to my house and beg for food.) If you are planning on adopting a white sheperd i really think you should! I love my dog so much and I think you will too!

I have owned 2 of these white albino`s German shepherd`s and both of them at around the age of 5 year`s old began to have fit`s, at first i thought it was just a "one off " when it happened to my first one but then it happened again to the second one ( off different breeder`s ) so maybe it is something to consider if you are thinking of getting one !
Beautiful dog`s though and so loyal , i would love another but afraid to now !

I have a friend who has a white german shepherd, and she loves him to death. I don't really know how the genetics work to make them like that, but I would guess it's some type of mutation.

From my experience with my friend's dog, he seems to be just like any other german shepherd behavior-wise...he's loyal and a great dog!

We had one she died last year aged 12. She was daft as a brush we always said if the house was robbed she would help them out with the t.v. We also have a tiny terrier who was the total boss out of the pair. I think though all dogs are defined by how they are trained not by what breed they are.
