it depends on what state you live in and what college you would go to. but in general, you need to get a bachelors (4 year) degree in what subject you want to teach, or if you want to teach elementary school, you could major in education (or anything, really).

then, after you receive your degree, you need to get into a credential program and take classes tailored to your program (for single subject which is middle school and high school, teaching one subject, or multiple subject for elementary school), and it takes about one year.

finally, you have to take any applicable tests and student teach (teach for free with a mentor teacher) for 4-6 months, then apply for your credential through the state. whatever school you go to for your credential should have this info for you.

also, some schools offer a combo Bachelors/credential program in 5 years. good luck!

4 years of college, 2 years of grad school to get a masters, but most school systems will let you work on your masters while teaching.
