trying to get your opinion. Do people even do 40 hour work weeks anymore? Do you think 45 hours a week is normal now for corporate america or is that excessive?

Yes, 45 hours is normal for a professional in the USA. A few weeks ago I asked my friends how many hours a typical professional would work per week. They said between 45 and 50 hours.

Think about the hours that lawyers, investment bankers and other high end professionals work. Many of them work 60 or even 80 hours a week.

But, if this is a dead end job you should leave. Working 45 hours a week or more without over time only makes sense if it will pay off in the long run.

45hrs is not excessive. And europe is a horrible example. Most of their nations are welfare states and have lagged way behind on the technology curve.
40hrs out of your 110+ hours your awake is not excessive at all....45 hrs in corporate america is probably low...i would imagine most of your very successful people work 50+

I work between 40 and 80 hrs a week, nationwide corporation, store development division....with travel. (and yes I am married)

Worked a min of 70hrs a week while I was in Iraq (Army) ..... so 45 isn't too rough

40 hours a week is crazy.. let alone 45. Companies need to look at folks being happy, well rested, and able to work rather then working these people for 90% of their lives! They need to take examples from Europe and how productivity really is messed up after working over 35 hours a week.

depends on the type of sector you are working in and the status of the company. I usually work 40 hours but lately we have been short staffed for the increased business so we are all working longer. But 45 hours is not excessive.
