Lack of knowledge and understanding and fear as a result? For all some people know, all they do is bite and shoot venom.
I think they're gorgeous and fascinating. Some people are just creeped out by the appearance - I know that's how I am with spiders. Their appearance is scary, yet so very intriguing.

I know. A lot of people do hate snakes. It's sad. Movies have made people afraid of them. Snakes are beautiful. If a snake isn't venomous I really don't see what the deal is. Most of the time when snakes kill people (or bite at all) it's the person's fault. Either they stepped on the snake, harassed the snake by cornering it.....that's called defending yourself (on the snake's part). Good question. I don't really understand why either. People also think I'm strange to like snakes since I'm a girl. -Girls can like snakes! Any girls out there that like snakes say so! lol

Oh, I SO have this one covered. Massasauga. Michigan Rattler. Locally known simply as the "Cotton mouth" or swamp snake.
Don't give me that "Snakes will run from you" line. These puppies will chase you down for the fun of it from the minute they are born. They live in weeds and water, so you Never see 'em coming. They've been known to "nest in", which means a few dozen all living in the same little weed patch.
And they are Deadly.
Snakes sure are beautiful. But if you've ever lived in a region with an aggressive species, being afraid is just a GOOD idea.
(and as for creepy, or different... I LOVE frogs. but then, I don't live anywhere near any poison arrow frogs....)

No eyelids, funky forked tongue, scaly skin... eww, they're weird! j/k
I think mostly it's misinformation and (no offense to anyone) ignorance. Not only movies give them a bad name, but I've had people tell me that snakes are evil. This all goes back to the Garden of Eden, some people just can't get over the fact that the snake was used.... Oh so many reasons......

Misinformation. Most snakes will run from you rather than try to hurt you. Most snakes kill and eat bugs, frogs, mice, and other vermin. Many snakes are cuddly if you give them the chance to get to know you.
I am a 54 year old woman who likes snakes and reptiles, but am scared to death of butterflies and bugs. Guess I'm just weird.

I like snakes from a distance, but up close I hate them. It's their feel...they're soo wierd and different. I have had bad experiences with snakes and I don't like their faces and their eyes.

I never liked them when I was small, friends use to pick up gardner snakes and run after me and my girlfriend. ever since then Can't stand them. I'm kind of getting use to them though, my son has a corn snake. I felt him once but I won't hold it.

mostly because everyone is influenced by the age old story of adam and eve and how the serpent tempted eve. And through out history's storys and art, serpents are usually portrayed as demonic and something to do with the devil, always evil. Which is hardly the case, they're beautilful creatures.

well from experience, I have been bit by green snakes, garden snakes, and I was lucky not to get bit by a rattlesnake. They give me the heebee jeebee's, plus it doen't help to have live snakes thown at you either.

Cause they are so different from us. No legs, weird eyes, scales, sometimes fangs....the list goes on. Dont get me wrong, I like snakes, and think they are cool animals, but thats my opinion of why people dont like them.
