this will be my first year boycotting the awards. the movie doesnt even have many votes yet and it is already voted as the 88 best movie OF ALL TIME! on every site i see it is by far the best reviewed. do the suits just not like foregin films? i think being up for foregin film is like a slap in the face. and why do war movies always get noms when they are all the same? war movie are more like exploitation films to me...and i am a huge fan of 60-80's sleeze...war films are quite the same for the most part. no flames please...just real anwsers.

My answer that gives the academy the benifit of the doubt is, since Pan's Labrynth only had limited release in 2006, not many folks have seen it. People can't nominate what they don't know.

My cynical answer is that no one has the balls (artistic integrity?) to push for an unusual movie like PL.

The mood of the academy is weird. A movie like Titanic get's best picture one year and American Beauty in another? Remember when Russel Crowe got best actor for Gladiator? Everyone pretty much admitted after the fact that they were really giving it to him for The Insider.
Sometimes they seem to be voting for things that are just simply entertaining, and other times they seem to be looking for some standard of "art."

The other think I would point out is that you can't really trust a rating poll on IMDB. It's not a very good or scientific sample of the population. It is neither random or heterogeneous.

I've got my fingers crossed that del Toro will do Hellboy 2 someday.

The problem isn't that they are predjudiced against foreign movies. The problem is that the members vote for the movies they've seen. Since "Pan's Labyrinth" is a new movie, and since it is a foreign movie, I'm sure that half the academy members haven't seen it.

The academy members are allowed to vote for 5 movies, which are weighted, and then the scores are tabulated. If it's not seen by enough people, it's not going to get enough votes. At least it got seen by enough people to get nominated in the catagories it was chosen for.

I've seen the movie, and it's the best movie I saw this year, but I like watching movies with subtitles. Some actors are to stupid to want to read through a 2 hour movie.

Well, the academy does not traditionally like genre films- fantasy, horror, science fiction, and comedy. It's rare to see anything from those categories even nominated, let alone winning. They nominated it for Best Foreign Film, which was thair admission that they couldn't let the film pass without recognition.
