~Actually, the creation of the Commonwealth of the Philippines in 1935 was the last step of the blueprint for independence, but the plans were delayed after the Japanese took over in 1941 and occcupied the Islands until '44. Shouldn't the real question be, 'should the US have stolen the Philippines (along with Cuba, Guam and Puerto Rico) in 1898?'. But hey, to victor belong the spoils. Philippine Independence Day was officially established by the US as July 4, 1946.

Yes, knowing that they were to be given their independence in 1946 gave the Filipinos a reason to resist the Japanese in WWII that was not there in the other colonies in the Far East. They also were willing to help American escapees and detainees during the occupation and the Japanese could not change their attitudes.
Also the US got bases in the Philippines that they needed and have a strong ally in the area.

The Phillipines declared their Independence, July 4, 1946!! Not 1986--typo? Answer: Probably, but with Pearl Harbor, safety and strategically, was not feasible.
