Bush's unit, the 147th Fighter Interceptor Squadron had by 1970 transitioned from being a 24-hour CONUS alert Squadron to the ANG training squadrong for the F-102, an aircraft used ONLY for CONUS defense that had no operational use whatsoever in Vietnam. By the time Bush was qualified as a pilot in the 147th the United States had already massively drawn down its committment in Vietnam and his F-102 experience did not qualify Bush to fly any aircraft being used in Vietnam anyway.
