The original equipment battery for your car is a 94R with a minimum of 765 CCA. You will most likely find this battery at O'Reilly's Auto Parts. This OE battery is manufactured by East Penn (Deka). East Penn is the primary battery supplier for O'Reilly's. You can verify the data with the attached web link to the Interstate Battery Dealer website.

Your BMW came with a group 92 battery, however you can use any standard group 91or 48 battery. If you have a convertible, you cannot use the 91 or 48 battery, since it does not have the vibration resistance the 92 battery has.
The best price I found was at Wal Mart. The battery is the same as the Autozone battery, but it was $20 less. You can also go to Sears, Costco, Kragen, Pep Boys, etc.
When you install the new battery, make sure the vent hose is attached to the battery (at the top of the battery between the positive and negative terminals. The vent hose allows hydrogen gas to escape to the outside of your car. Why is this important? A lead/acid battery produces hydrogen gas as it charges. If you do not allow it to escape, you risk hydrogen gas build up and the possibility of an explosion.
Also, I recommend buying those little green and red felt protectors. They help keep the battery terminals and cables from getting corroded.
I hope this helps.

Well you don't say if this car is under an original, or extended warranty. If that is the case, then you'll be well advised to call your local service center and ask them if buying an off-the-shelf battery violates your warranty. This sounds dumb I know BUT:
What you're specifically concerned with is, if you are under a warranty, and later have some starter/alternator/accessory problems, you might find your Autozone special is going to cost you some bucks.

Just about any auto parts store, some like Kragen or Auto zone may even test, charge or replace for you at no extra cost.

Try a group 48 or a group 41. They may work.
