Schools in the Northern states expect to close school due to snow during the school year. They're referred to as snow days. The kids love them for obvious reasons but, If there are too many snow days during the year, then school has to be extended a few days at the end of the year (early June) to meet the state's requirements for the length of a school year. The number of snow days has dropped significantly over the last 10 to 20 years in the Chicago area after the Mayor of Chicago lost his job because of a failure to clean the streets quick enough many years ago. Now we have lots of equipment out all through the night to get the streets clean for those who go to work. Unfortunately, that includes the teachers and the kids.
I hope this helps.

Well it depends on how you want to interpreted. A snow day can be a day when it's just snowing, but not enough to hamper daily lifes.
However, the snow day you're likely thinking of is the kind that hampers everyday life.
Well, a snow day is typically a day when kids get a day off from school, due to the fact that a signifcant winter storm has hampered travel significantly on the roads, preventing the children or their transportaion from reaching the school safely, thus having to close the school.

It is when schools are canceled for the day because of a snow storm. There is just too much snow to get the roads cleared and safe for the buses to get through.

School being canceled due to inclement weather, specifically snow. There is so much snow that the roads are closed. So the kids go snowboarding and have snowball fights. This was actually a movie.
