Lincoln could not have done so, but the south should have been allowed to secede. Any agreement can be nullified. No one should be forced to comply in a political matter by force of arms.

How about that states chose to come together and in fact the states in the NE threatened to secede several years after the revolutio.
And Why is half the people wanting to not be apart of this county a justification for forcing them and causing the death of 600,000 people?
The war was not fought as some people today like to think to free the slaves. And if this were true the slaves would have been freed in a few years anyway like they were in every other country on the planet

The 13 states were sovereign nations who came together for a few things under a constitution. National defense, foreign treaties, common coinage and post office and not much more. They freely joined they should have been able to freely leave.
