Hmmm, is this a riddle?...Something that is not taught but that defines how we live. I'd have to say, social convention. The way we live our lives based on what our society dictates is the norm at that particular time. Why don't I eat my food with my hands? Because society says no. Why don't I walk around town in a loin cloth? Because society says no. Why don't I kill my next door neighbour? Because society says no. Of course, society can be said to be an effect of our laws and even our 'real' religions, but hey, we act in particular ways without really questioning why, and that can be blamed on social convention.

Closest I can think of is Buddahism, the Buddah was a teacher, but never claimed to be a prophet or God or anything.
