Charles should have married Camilla way back in the 1970s, but he was too busy having fun (having affairs more like it) and she couldnt wait, so she married Tom.
Then when he was under pressure to get married, he asked her for advice, and Camilla said marry Diana, because she's a sweet innocent & naive, and will not make any waves. (in other words she wont complain about them carrying on their affair). Cammilla was wrong, because Diana had seen her parents marriage break up over affais, and she knew she couldnt go through that again, nor did she want to put her boys through it, so she got tough and stood her ground.
Upper class rules have always said if you want an affair, fine, but do it discretely. Diana was the first person in a very long time who stood up and said that upper class having affairs meant their marriages were fake.
She married for love, and she respected her husband. She expected to receive that same respect in return. Not be treated like the good little wife who keeps her mouth shut and does nothing.
Camilla deserved what she got - she had to wait almost 10 years after the divorce to get remarried. I wish Charles had not married her, and I really hope that niether of them become king & queen.
Yes I think William can and should marry a commoner. (at least someone of the upper class but with no royal blood) He has to. Most of the royals in Europe available of marriageable age are catholic and the english discriminatory rules says he cannot marry a catholic if he still wants to be king.
Brigadier General has nothing to do with royalty. If you are descended from a Viscount, Earl, Duke, Marquis etc, then you are of the upper class, but can still be a commoner if there is no royal ancestry.
As long as William treats his wife with respect she deserves, and does NOT cheat on her, then the marriage should work out. He would probably want his marriage to work, because he like his mother, would not want to go through another messy divorce.
I just hope Charles STOPS pressuring William to settle down. I read that William says he doesnt to get married until he is 28. He's only 24 (turning 25 this year).
Give the kid some space please Charles.
You had 35 years of freedom before you got any pressure to get married. And when you did, you still managed to f**k it up.
PS I think Charles is a huge DORK.

Charles joined the navy and Camilla did not wish to wait so she married Andrew Parker Bowles. Background does not come into it. Diana was aristocratic and Camilla was not but both are techincally commoners in law. Royals have been marrying commoners (non-royals) since the 1920s and there is no bar to William marrying Kate.

Times have changed. In the 1970s when Charles and Camilla met, the Royal Family still didn't really want the heir to the throne marrying a "commoner" but that was over 30 years ago and they have learned from their mistakes (the disaster that was Charles and Diana's "arranged" marraige").

Camilla was married and the royal family is finally transitioning into modern times. Besides they would probably rather William marry someone he truly love than to go through another divorce such as Charles' and Diana's

because of the fact Camilla grow to be already married. Camilla married her ex husband in 1973 and Prince Charles and Princess Diana have been given married in 1981. Camilla grow to be married for almost 10 years while Charles and Diana have been given married. i do no longer comprehend why Camilla married her first husband yet there are some rumors that Queen Elizabeth II did no longer choose Prince Charles to marry her. while he met Diana, the Queen needed him to marry her, and that grow to be what he did.

He could have, he went with her and then told her that he did not want to get married. He sowed his wild oats. She married, and she started a family.Charles had to marry, so he chose Diana. I do think that he thought he could love her, but he wanted his cake and eat it too. Diana would not tolerate his love affair with Camilla, and he basically blew her off. So she got lonely and started having affairs of her own(who could blame her). This whole thing should be a lesson to William, marry who you love- royal or commoner. Don't throw your life away on what the Queen says you should do, marry the girl that makes you happy.

Charles was not granted permission to marry Camilla because of 'bad luck'. You see, Camilla's grandmother was the mistress of Charles' grandfather. True. Look it up. The Queen thought that a curse would befall the House of Windsor if Charles and Camilla were to marry.....
***Camilla is NOT a commoner. Her father was a Brigadier General. The girl's answer above me is crap. Camilla came from a highly RESPECTED family and was not 'common'. Camilla's royal lineage, or lack thereof, is redundant. I never said Camilla had blue blood, I said she is not a 'commoner'. Big difference. Military rank is NOT common.
Yes, William can marry a 'commoner' but she would have to be trained in all the social graces befitting that of a future queen.

Camilla didn't want to live in the spotlight, plus she had lived with a man before Charles and wasn't a virgin. In the early eighties, it was still important the mother of the future King of England be a virgin when she married. It had to do with public perception.
Even with Kate Middleton, there are no stories of previous serious boyfriends.
However, the royal family has seen it is better for the future king to be with a woman her loves and not someone who is good for the image of the family. Although Kate is a great example of a British Rose!

Because Camilla was already married, then a divorcee. At the time it would not have worked.
William can marry a commoner, if he wants to.
