Glocks are ok but I want a gun that's not made of plastic. I don't trust a gun that made of plastic if I have to defend myself.

This can be a complex question for a new shooter. A 1911 format pistol such as the Colt, the Kimber and many others are single action autoloaders. This means that in order for the pistol to fire, the hammer must be manually ******, normally by racking the slide. After the shot, the slide cycling will cock the hammer for each shot there after. This means that the only function of the trigger is to relase the hammer. And that gives you a much lighter trigger pull and much shorter than any other type of handgun.

While this is a great aid to accurate and fast shooting, it requires a great deal of practice and familairaty with the gun. Under stress it is pretty easy to have an accidental discharge. If you are not committed to getting adaquate instruction and putting in significant range time, I strongly suggest that you look to a different type of action.

The striker fired Glock or Springfield XD are both good choices. There are some .45 ACP revolvers that are good as well and Winchester is once again making .45 auto rim ammo so you don't have to get moon clips.

However if you are willing to spend the time at the range to become proficient with a 1911 pistol, consider a Para- Ordanance. They make a number of pistols in different configurations. Many are high capacity with a full sized P-14 carrying 14 rounds of .45ACP in the magazine and one in the barrel. I own three Para pistols, two of which I shoot in compitition, and and the third is a carry gun. I have a great deal of faith in these pistols.

Good Luck!

Don't knock Glocks. There's a saying:

Colts and Kimbers are what you show your friends. Glocks are what you show your enemies.

You would be best served by trying several different guns out and seeing which fit your hand the best. Most companies make a 1911A1 clone. Ruger, Smith & Wesson, Springfield, Heckler & Koch, and Sig Sauer all make .45ACP handguns.

If you want an all-steel gun, an unmodified the Springfield Armory mil-spec 1911A1 is one of your better choices. Note that most modifications to improve accuracy are useless at normal ranges and incrementally make the gun less reliable.

There are revolvers that shoot .45ACP. They are more reliable than semiauto pistols.

Do more research. I own a Glock, and they are one of the finest combat handguns in the world, particularly in terms of reliability. Regardless, there are many excellent guns out there.

Go to a training class and try a few out on the range. Most ranges will rent handguns to you.

Revolvers are less complex and are virtually fool-proof. Semi-auto's are more complex, and probably are suited for experienced shooters.

A .45 is a big bore. Its a great load, but keep your options open.

Any incarnation of a 1911. I would stay away from Kimber's with the external ejector

I personally have a 6-shot .22. It is a good gun for protection and for target shooting. It is a Winchester. They make good guns..
