You don't want to put bamboo in with a betta fish, that can cause illness. And NEVER take away the filtration system, your fish will not be happy if that isn't there. Putting him in a bigger tank, is not a problem but make sure you have a heater for him and a good fltration system. You want the water in the tank to be between 78-82 degreesF. But do away with the bamboo and keep the filter. And always keep a ample supply of betta fish food around to feed him. Feeding him 1-2 times a day is alright. But you can go every other day to, just keep track of the feedings so you aren't overfeeding him. Watch for signs like split or shredded fins, bulging eyes, cloudy eyes, swollen body, and redness around the gills. As these are all signs of illness. Also, you want to buy a bottle of Start Right, it is a sress reducer, and buy some Ick guard that will prevent the fish from getting it. And if it does then put it in the water. Also, buy some Clear Water, it helps keeps the odors and cloudiness out of the water, and keeps your fish happy and healthy. Once in a while give him some bloodworms, they help with energy, and feeder guppies are another good thing to gie him once in a while though. Have a thermometer in the water to keep track of the temperature as this is very important. Live plants like lilies, or even fake plants are ok, but not bamboo.

No, it is not safe. It is mean!! While your fish will be forced to live in it's own waste, and not be able to breath, it will not live a happy life and will die far sooner than it should. Please search the net for information regarding the keeping of Betta fish and more importantly study and familiarize yourself with the Nitrogen cycle and how to properly set up a tank BEFORE you add fish. Whoever said they will eat the roots is right, they will. BUT ONLY BECAUSE THEY ARE STARVING.
NOTE: Selling a betta in a vase with a Peace Lily has become in vogue. However, a flower vase is not a suitable environment for the betta.
I will not copy the rest of the article over, I will simply supply a couple of links and hope for your fish's sake that you are a responsible pet owner and will study up on the matter yourself.

This is a really stupid set up for a fish. I'm sorry but it is. Bettas need a tank, not a small cramped space despite what pet stores try to tell you.
They need a wide surface area for breathing and you're not going to get that in a vase especially with a plant hogging up the room.
The roots of the plant could rot and this isn't good for the water. Also, you need to have clean water and to be able to feed your betta meaty foods.
Do your betta a favor and get them a tank.

No. Bettas need cycled water, more than in a vase. They need oxygen on top of the water. They are carnivores. The only reason they eat the plant roots is out of starvation.

No, this set up does not allow oxygen to get into the water or to the air over the water, which is critical because bettas need air to breathe. The plants also may have small pieces rot, which foul the water and will kill the betta. On top of all that, the case is way too small for any fish, they need tanks.

No not at all your fish should be in a tank unless it is a very big vase with a very wide opening that should not be blocked off fish also need to breath.

Yes, it is totally safe - as long as you don't fertilize the plant. He will do better then the plant in the long run. My Betta & Vase looked good for the first 4 or 5 months and then the plant started to die off - Betta was fine, I just had to keep the water clean because of the decomposing plant.

chances are you have a peace lily plant in your vase. you can swap it out for serveral other plants that do a lot better -- umbrella plants, ribbon plants, cyprus, even philodendron. just make sure you feed the betta some pellets or frozen bloodworms -- they can't live off the plant. and change the water weekly if not more often.

thats fine for bettas, thats actually how alot of them come. They will eat off of the roots, but you can still feed them betta food as well. My mom has had a betta in a vase like that for over 4 years now.. its lived way longer than ones that people keep in little bowls. You just need to change the water frequently. I think they like to hid in the roots too.
